On July 16, Becca Fox and Matt Walsh of psychedelic Afro-soul band Gentleman Brawlers welcomed Soundshop founder Akpanoluo Etteh to their Instagram page for a virtual interview. Wearing silly sunglasses and wide smiles, they discussed making music and staying creative in the age of COVID-19.

First up, Akpanoluo asked Becca and Matt how they devised their video for their new single “My Thing,” which was filmed during quarantine in New York City. Matt explained that Gentleman Brawlers typically spend a lot of time playing concerts, so as soon as they realized that live shows wouldn’t be an option for some time, they had to ask themselves how to revitalize their creative routine. They chose to use the time to record new material, including the “My Thing” video. Becca then spoke about the struggles of shooting during quarantine. They were restricted to using their apartment, so they had to figure out how to best use the space. When they realized that the most ideal location for filming was in a narrow hallway, they decided to experiment with the vertical video format. She was uncertain about it at first, but she ended up loving the result.

Akpanoluo then asked them more generally how they’ve been adjusting to quarantine: what have they been working on? What have they been thinking about? Matt shared that he’s been reflecting on the simple joys that he used to take for granted, such as going out and seeing friends. Becca said that she’s enjoyed living life at a slower pace, since she’s typically on the go. Baking and solving puzzles have been two of her favorite pastimes as of late.

Akpanoluo, Becca, and Matt wrapped up the interview by premiering the video for “My Thing”, which intersperses shots of Becca dancing and climbing up the walls with colorful visuals in an unrepentant burst of joy.
